and Volcanism in the Rift Valley

a Ethiopian we have set up a new organisation locally, as our clients from tours
to Egypt, Namibia and Mongolia will know. We can assure you that our trips
are of the highest standard with the best quality that is locally available.
We offer 3 different tours:

Omo Valley: Nativ tribes: Erbore, Mursi, Hamer, Benna, ...
and Lake Chamo with typical African Safari animals
Lalibela: Old christianity culture in Lalibela with its rock churches

Photographic-Tour Dallol, Vulcano Erta Ale and the Saltlake Asala
The landscape of the Danakil Desert in the northernmost part of The Rift Valley will
be incomparable. The Danakil lies 119 metres below sea-level and is amongst the hottest
places on earth. That is why we visit the area in winter time.
At other times temperatures above 55o C are not unusual! We will be rewarded with a landscape
without equal: the Dallol will thrill us all!
Also the rest of the Danakil region with the huge salt lake and camel caravans is very photogenic!
We will climb the Ert'Ale Volcano and experience the imposing molten seething magma in
one of only three volcanic magma 'lakes' in the world. The colours of the glowing lava will
be a beauty for the eye to behold and to photograph.
Some Highlights of the Tour are
- The volcanic lake of Ert'Ale Volcano
- The Danakil Desert and The Rift Valley
- Salt lakes in Danakil and Camel caravans

Degree of Difficulty of theTrip
Our viewpoints and photographic spots are easily accessible.
A few spots that we visit are at 2300 metres above sea level.
No special training is needed except perhaps to ascend the Ert'Ale.
We need 4-4,5 hrs for the ascent which we do at night because it is cooler then..
We spend the night at the peak.
He who wishes to, can linger at the crater rim.
The descent also takes 3 to 4 hrs.
We recommend hiking shoes with a good tread on the sole. The Lava has sharp edges !
Vaccinations & Malaria prophylaxis
Highly recommended:
Combined Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio vaccine
Hepatitis
Yellow fever
Malaria prophylaxis with Malarone
During our travel times there should only be a few or no mosquitoes around...
Good Vehicles
Because the single photographic sites are sometimes very far apart with long distances to travel
between them, we are of the opinion that there should only be 3 guests per vehicle.
You will therefore have the greatest possible comfort.
The vehicles are 5-door Landcruisers in good condition and have forward facing seats!
On other Ethiopian tours there are usually 4-5 guests in a Landcruiser.....with us there are only 3!
The roads in the south are rough and dusty.
An unforgettable Photographic tour is offered with the unimaginable North-East Africa themes.
The trip is in the form of an expedition !

the rest of their life Experiences with the native African Folk are incomparable.
Many of the native tribes are still living today as they did centuries ago. Some are in part

The Equipment is of our usual High Quality
The Ethiopia Tours will be of the usual high standard of Fotoreisen.ch !
Here also we have the same high level infrastructure available that we
have for e.g. in Egypt and Namibia. With it we are able to stand out well
ahead of other providers for quality and service. Also we are able to offer
varied meals as befits the style of fotoreisen.ch.
Our accommodation is the best that is locally available.
Attention: If you expect luxurious accommodation in Ethiopia you should
not join us on these tours !
4* lodging means as much as ..... running water = One star..., electricity
available = two stars..., bed is ok = three stars and so on.. Cleanliness is
according to the customary standard. Also tiny many-legged room mates
should not scare you..
We really prefer Camping out in nature where we can truly show what we're made of!
Mosquitoe nets are always available in the accommodations when mosquitoes are anticipated.
Our trips though are in the low mosquitoe season or even in part when the insect is absent!
The meals are very good and very varied.
We eat in the best restaurants or we cook ourselves!
Please don't compare our trips with much cheaper ones.
We travell in the country for 19 days and have only 3 guests per vehicle
( the normal is 4 or 5 and then the driver....) also, we use the best of fixed
accomodation wherever possible. Nights in a tent are unavoidable.
You will see for yourselves that our overnighting in tents with our crew
is much better than most of the accomodation in buildings.
Enjoy with us an absolutely top class Trip of a high quality standard
that until now was not possible.
The journey normaly begins and ends in Zurich.
It's possible to join the trip in Frankfurt.
We fly to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

architecturally fascinating.
The different native populations in the South will fascinate us
with their daily life and their rituals. We will also discover interesting

Climate
The climate is generally comfortable except in the low-lying Danakil Desert and in
Ogaden where it is extremely hot and can be very dry all year long .
In the Highlands a comfortable climate prevails but the mountains do have night frost.
The single rainy season in the West has double the amount of rainfall that the two
rainy seasons bring to the East. During this time there are daily thunderstorms.
The Ethiopian climate is mostly influenced by the altitude. The annual rainfall
increases the higher you are above sea level. However, there is more rainfall
in the lower altitudes of the Southern than in the Higher altitudes of the Northern
and Eastern Highlands.
In a hot tropical zone that is below 1800 metres the average annual temperature
is 27oC, and the annual rainfall less than 600 millimeters.
The temperate zones to which most parts of the High plains belong, which are
between 1800 and 2500 metres above sea level, have an average annual temperature
of 22o C and an annual rainfall between 600 and 1600 millimeters.
Above 2500 metres is a climate zone with an average temperature of 16o C and
an annual rainfall up to 1800 millimeters. At all altitude levels, the average monthly
temperatures vary by less than 5oC; however, the daily variation can be as much
as over 20o C. The main rainy season is between the middle of June and
September; followed by a dry period which can be interrupted by a short rainy
period in February and March.
Significantly dryer is the largest part of the Danakil depression as well
as the south-east of the country.
Vaccinations & Malaria prophylaxis
Highly recommended:
Combined Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio vaccine
Hepatitis
Yellow fever
Malaria prophylaxis with Malarone
During our travel times there should only be a few or no mosquitoes around...
Note for battery charging
We of course provide voltage adapters in every vehicle so that you can recharge
your camera batteries whilst travelling.
